  • Workshop AI MAPS: Doelwisseling en Beeldmateriaal
    • On November 28th, a workshop will be organized in the context of the AI MAPS (Artificial Intelligence for Multi-Agency Public Safety) program. The workshop will allow for discussion between field-experts from different organizations (police department, fire department and academic specialists) on the use of AI and digital imaging in their field. Special attention will be given to the ethical, legal and societal aspects of purpose changes of digital imaging. Discussion topics include ‘Where and when do purpose changes in the use of digital imaging occur?’, ‘How is proportionality taken into account in case of purpose changes?’, ‘What role does the legal perspective play for purpose changes?’, ‘Are there clear rules about accountability when it comes to purpose changes?’ and many more.   • “Design Matters!” Conference on ‘Emerging Technologies and Behavioural-driven Designs’, November 14th 2023
    • On November 14th, the Erasmus University Rotterdam in collaboration with the Helsinki Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities, hosted the the ‘Conference on Emerging Technologies and Behavioural-driven Designs’. During the conference, several researchers spoke about the work they have done on the ways design and technology are included in daily life. Discussed topics included: ‘Human-centric design and social impact’, ‘Choice architecture and behavioural science’, ‘Dark patterns and regulation by design’ and ‘Ethical design and public value.’ The conference allowed for insightful debate in which prof. dr.   • DIGITAL GOVERNANCE AND THE LAW IN THE AGE OF AI, May 16-17 2023
    • On May 16 and 17, the Bar Ilan University hosted the DIGOV conference on: “Digital governance and the Law in the age of AI.” During the conference, top researchers spoke about their work. In addition, panels and round tables will allow for lively and fruitful academic debate. Topics include: AI and Digitalization in Courts, Ethical Risks of Digital Services, Use and Regulation of Emerging Technologies, and many more. For the full schedule, click here.
  • COMPETITION LAW AND BEYOND: EFFICIENT DIGITAL MARKETS THROUGH PRIVACY, TAXATION, AND CONSUMER PROTECTION, September 30th 2022
    • Over the past few years, it has become obvious that competition law is not the only tool, and perhaps not always the most appropriate one, to discipline market participants. Other regulatory and policy mechanisms, such as consumer protection laws, privacy laws, and taxation have increasingly been called into action with a view to making markets work more efficiently. Bringing together the expertise of scholars and policy-makers from various disciplines, such as law, economics, computer science, and sociology, the conference aims to advance the debate on how competition law works together and is complemented by other laws and policies.   • BETWEEN COMPETITION AND REGULATION: TAMING ONLINE PLATFORMS AND INTERMEDIARIES, December 17th 2021
    • The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Digital Governance hosted by the Centre for Business Law and Practice at the University of Leeds (jointly with Erasmus University Rotterdam and Bar Ilan University ) organised a hybrid international conference on the interface of competition law and regulation in online platform markets. Against the backdrop of the rising power of tech giants and their online platforms, a number of developments over the past few years have blurred the line between ex ante regulation and ex post competition enforcement. The conference brings together a mix of experts from various disciplines – law, economics, computer science, and management – to discuss the need for and the available tools for taming online platforms and intermediaries.   • ON THE CROSSROADS OF LAW AND ECONOMICS WORKSHOP: CRIME AND COMPUTATIONAL METHODS, December 3rd 2021
    • On the third of December, our bi-annual Workshop at the Crossroads of Law and Economics was hosted, this time on the topic of criminal law and criminal justice system, as investigated using computational methods. From DIGOV, prof. dr. Klaus Heine was one of the organizers and speakers.
  • Conference on the Economic and Legal Challenges in the advent of smart products October 4 – 6, 2021
    • Organized by the center of interdisciplinary research of the university of Bielefeld, this three day hybrid conference offered a platform for disciplinary and interdisciplinary exchange on the topic of smart products. From DIGOV, prof. dr. Klaus Heine and dr. Alberto Quintavalla spoke at the conference.
  • AI AND HUMAN RIGHTS WORKSHOP: FRIEND OR FOE?, October 28th 2021
    • The Erasmus School of Law, together with the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Digital Governance, invited submissions for a workshop supported by the Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research, that was held on October 28, 2021. The purpose of this one-day workshop is to create an all-encompassing discussion on the impact of Artificial Intelligence on Human Rights. Furthermore, it aims to open up a new dialogue among junior and more senior researchers. For more information on the workshop, click here
  • ETHICAL AI: PERSPECTIVES ON LAW, REGULATIONS AND POLICY (ONLINE), March 29-30 2021
    • In this two-day online workshop, legal theories and practices have been assessed for their suitability to cope with the social, economics and ethical challenges of the digital transformation through AI and Big Data. The workshop (see detailed schedule hereunder) consisted of keynote lectures by prominent academicians and politicians as prof. Luciano Floridi (Oxford), prof. Ryan Abott (Surrey), Axel Voss (MEP) and prof. Ina Ebert (MunichRE). The workshop was complemented by a PhD master class and an industry roundtable.
  • Digital Governance in the Times of Covid-19 (Online), February 17-18 2021
    • The Bar-Ilan LawData Lab and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Digital Governance organised an online workshop on Digital Governance in the Times of Covid-19. The workshop included three panels of leading researchers and public policy advocates who shared their thoughts on Algorithmic Regulation and Digital Policy Tools during Covid-19, Zoom Parliaments during Covid-19 and Online Courts during Covid-19 and Beyond.   • Erasmus Data Summit 2020: Impact of AI on Society, July 8th 2020
    • The Erasmus Centre for Data Analytics organised the Erasmus Data Summit 2020. This year’s summit was held fully online due to the COVID-19 related restrictions. COVID-19 has brought the world to stand still and has had a major impact on society. During the crisis, we observed how exponential technologies are used towards the benefit of society, and if not regulated properly, can lead to severe negative outcomes as well. This is true for AI as well. Therefore, the theme of this year’s summit was “Impact of AI on society” and throughout the session, we have explored the topic of AI and its impact through multi-disciplinary lenses, both optimistic and cautious.   • KICK-OFF CONFERENCE: THE ROUNDABOUTS OF DIGITAL GOVERNANCE, January 28-30 2020
    • The kick-off conference of DIGOV focused on the perimeter of digital governance. The conference worked on an inventory of the hot-spots of digital governance, and it discussed with which best practices and approaches one can get a grip on the challenges of the ongoing digital transformation. The conference was concerned with overarching questions on the outer limits of digital governance and the internal modalities of achieving it—directly or indirectly, and privately or publicly. The conference had two major parts addressing the fundamental societal challenges of digital governance, thereby following the dimensions 1) private/public and 2) intra/cross jurisdictional.
